m3gr1ml0ck    Friday, Sep 19, 2014, 07:10:24 AM  Ambrosio's work ignores the more mature approach that were typical of Cimino's production in the 1970s, not to mention Romano Scarpa's.
The "reboot" is quite the big letdown: nothing new, of course, as the Disney universe does't have anything like a "continuity", but in the case of specifically-created charactes such as the Ki-Kongi or the Paperoidi (or Reginella) I would expect the new writers to continue the original saga. Or just add some extra bits without any "retcons". Instead, what we get here is a dumbed down version of the original concepts: the Ki-Kongi go from titanic threat to big, easily-defeated puppets that wouln't scare anyone; King Ducklien is now the idiotic mad scientist Quacklien which is the sum of the worst cliches ever (at least Ambrosio had the decency of changing his name, showing a tad of respect for the original character).
Part 2, script-wise speaking, is quite boring: the sense of timing is terrible, with long monologues addedd to the key moment where action should be capital; the story feels pointlessly crammed, and so does the art. Even larger panels seems crammed and at the same time redundant. No sense of danger, no dramatic moments: everything flows away as dull and uninteresting, even when the action and the battle should instead give us some thrill.
Art is also too funny and "cartoon-style deformed": nothing like the greatness that Cavazzano injected in his Ki-Kongi (the real ones) or the balanced harmony that Scarpa used to illustrate the real Paperoidi.

So far, this mini-series was just a waste of time and space, but there's a bright side to it. As it is a retcon, goofy and amateurish at that, then there's no reason that a real writer can't just ignore it and choose to continue the original storylines of the Ki-Kongi and the Paperoidi, taking them on a new and more clever path.

Part 3 is fairly dull and uninteresting. Pirates? Quacklien who becomes reasonable but only temporarily?
Too much dialogue, especially when it comes to stating the obvious to the detriment of the story action pace.

Part 4 shows an amount of references to classic, beautiful stories, which is quite the striking contrast with this low-quality comic for very mentally-impaired children: the title is a reference to Cimino's stories, while the geography of the Money Bin is taken from one of Pezzin's stories.
The slowness in locating a landing spot is terrifying: does Paperino really need to explain everything with that verbose amount of details?
At least the plot devised by Ducklien is not bad; the ending teaches Scrooge a predictably mediocre and corny lesson directly from his past.

tcp    Monday, Mar 2, 2020, 11:36:38 AM  Inganno aureo: fan fiction puerile e accomodante, ma dove i tre protagonisti sono abbastanza centrati, e, tutto sommato, la ret-con ha una sua coerenza interna, in termini di concatenazione di eventi. I dialoghi si sforzano (con fatica) di copiare Cimino, soprattutto all'inizio, che è comunque una cosa che va in controtendenza con la massiccia revisione dei testi di quell'autore degli anni 2000. Disegni in evoluzione, tra lo stile squadratissimo precedente e quello puccioso successivo, quindi un po' così un po' cosà. L'idea della saga di viaggio rimanda simpaticamente a Martina, ma 4 puntate sembrano poche per poter creare un nuovo cult.
Indigestione aurifera: arte cartoonesca e slapstick, fin troppo forse. La citazione dell'oro a 24k è ingannevole, perché Ambrosio non intende omaggiare tutti i grandi classici a tema aurifero, ma semplicemente proseguire la sua fan fiction. Riecco allora Quacklien, che è il cattivo smascherato al termine del canovaccio trito dello stregone ingannatore, in cui l'unica cosa interessante è lo scontro fra finti pokemon leggendari (ma è tutto finto, appunto). Finale sospeso per costringerci a proseguire la lettura.
Contro il co$mo-pirata Paperino: elementi fichi, a partire dal titolo. Pirati, robot torturati, raggi disintegratori, Paperone martiniano (ma per finta), "paperobot contro i paperoidi" (anche se la mente va più a "Papercop contro Roborock"). Disegni tardo-pikappici, con alieni diversi e colorati. Archetipi narrativi quali il finto traditore e il finto amico, a ridosso del climax. E l'improvviso ritorno a casa non appare incoerente. Nonostante tutto questo, è una lettura un po' moscia e meccanica.
Recupero monetario: l'operazione remake giunge a compimento, i due classici di Scarpa e Cimino/Cavazzano vengono fusi e rifatti in stile moderno, superficialmente frenetico e spiegazionista (la vignetta per gli "amici lettori" è totalmente inutile ai fini narrativi). Disegni per cui provare nostalgia, ma non c'è molto altro. La conclusione è quella che ci si aspettava dall'inizio, eccetto per l'affare pezziniano, buttato dentro per fare quadrare i conti.
