When I saw on the paperpedia that Fantomius traveled in time to meet Donald at some point I NEEDED to read that. Too bad the inducks link didn't work. A few weeks later it did, and I saw that it wasn't published in NL yet and thought well, we never get the fun stuff.
Present day, I understand Egmont's confusing way of publishing Fantomius much better, and have been extra excited since I saw the German cover on Duckipedia. I see the Dutch cover pop up in the middle of the day on the Donald Duck Shop website, and I can't wait. Next day, on my way back home, I pass the bookstore I always pass, and they have the pocket with Fantomius and Paperinik both on the cover.
At home, after a year of waiting, my expectations over the moon, maybe the most excited I have ever been to read a duck comic, I finally read the story, and it's just kinda okay.
Like, it's good, it's Fantomius and time travel how can't it be a lot of fun. But it isn't any different structurally from previous Fantomius stories I have read. The references to those previous stories are really nice I will add. The fact that Gervasio also references his (I think) first written story and manages to incorporate it into the plot is really sweet. I like the references a lot.
Art wise, Gervasio is only getting better, but writing wise... It is still of the usual high quality, but for a story longer than 50 pages I expected a bit more.
But that doesn't take away from the fact it's fantomius meets paperinik and they start doing goofy stuff together and those 50+ pages are just pure fun. 8,5/10. But that's not an option so a 9. |
