Also it was in keeping with its time and therefore more sentimental than we find generally acceptable today. In my view this is one of Barks best Donald Duck stories with a clever complex and character driven twisting and turning plot line and plenty of gags and comic situations. A great Christmas story. The art is of course excellent. |

Comunque la storia è pur sempre degli anni 1950, ha i suoi bei momenti e i paperi sono ben caratterizzati (se fossero stati meno prolissi, ne avrebbero guadagnato).

| marioandreaaldeghi | | | | Tuesday, Jan 5, 2021, 09:41:27 AM | Non so proprio che storia abbia letto il caro LPJ, ma di sicuro non questa: un classico di Natale, anzi IL classico di Natale, di sicuro merita di stare almeno nella top 10 (E invece no: ventisettesimo posto, che rabbia, se trova davanti l'indubbiamente bella Paperino in vacanza, ma che non meritava assolutamente un posto nella top 10) L'intento è lodevole e per una volta i paperi fanno i conti con una realtà "umana" cioè un quartiere povero, come nel mondo ce ne saranno a milioni (e smettono di vivere nel loro mondo fantastico: certi autori dimenticano secondo me che anche i paperi e i topi hanno gli stessi problemi degli umani: inquinamento, povertà...) Detto questo, la prima parte è un po' sdolcinata, ma di sicuro i nipotini hanno avuto un'idea molto bella, regalare un Natale decente ai poveri bambini del quartiere Agonia e tutti cercano di contribuire, tranne lo Zio Paperone (è una cosa tragi-comica, pensando che lui viveva nelle stesse condizioni quando era bambino) ed è stato bello per una volta vedere Gastone in un ruolo non da antagonista, ma anzi che contribuisce alla causa. Tornando allo zio Paperone, la storia vede anche la prima apparizione, anche se in foto, di suo zio Jake, che verrà impersonato da Paperino per spillargli cinque dollari, non consapevole che era già morto cinquant'anni prima! Sempre lo zione pronuncia una frase curiosa: (ma forse è la mia traduzione) -Facile come rubare gli spinaci a un bambino- Ancora una volta Barks si scatena con la sua ironia. Cosa?! Non erano le caramelle? Ma forse Carl ha ragione: dato che ai bambini gli spinaci non piacciono, se li fanno sottrarre più facilmente! La seconda parte della storia è invece comicissima: Paperone che perde tutto il suo denaro in una voragine per colpa di un ventino (nella mia traduzione era decino, ma vabbè) dovrebbe essere terribile per lui, ma a me fa un gran ridere. Indimenticabile la scena di quegli ingegneri incapaci in equilibrio sul righello per esaminare il buco. Impagabile poi lo sviluppo nella grotta e l'idea del trenino. Alla fine la storia finisce bene per tutti, i bambini del quartiere Agonia hanno il loro bel Natale e i loro trenini... tranne che per lo zione che nel comicissimo finale dovrà attendere duecentoundici anni prima di recuperare tutto il suo denaro. Don Rosa, più "razionale" realizzerà un sequel, in cui scopriamo che il trenino è stato aiutato da un'invenzione di Archimede, motivo per cui ritroviamo Paperone e i suoi soldi poco dopo.
