Unfortunately the way the plot is solved at the end is quite weak (Mickey rescues Michael and trapping the bad guys basically like he did the year before in the continuity on the Foreign Legion...it looks a little bit too "routine" to me). Such a great story deserved an equally great conclusion. But well, you cannot have all. Beside that, all the rest is nothing but Gottfredson/Osborne at their best! Monumental artwork, racy humor, funny dialogues, usual gentle social criticism. King Michael XIV is a great character, extremely funny. |

Equal parts humor and intrigue, there are a ton of great character moments for Mickey and Minnie, and the way the two of them work as a team to save the day might make this their best adventure together. "Monarch" really shows how important Mickey and Minnie are to each other, and how much they motivate each other's actions. I especially like the epilogue as the lovebirds journey back to America, it's a sweet sequence and the closest thing the two have to a date in the Gottfredson canon. |
