The art is one of the most beautiful I have seen and it looks terrific in color. But the main power is the villain. Has the Blot been better in any other story? I don't think so. He is more than your average criminal genius, he is a literal phantom, a thief with a incredibly funny twist. The gags and death traps are amazing and I can excuse the cartoony writing because it is consistent through out and the result feels very solid. Rimane però una storia dinamica e interessante. 8 | | m3gr1ml0ck | | | | Sunday, Sep 18, 2016, 12:42:05 PM | Una lettura magnetica, incredibilmente gustosa e accattivante: dopo anni di romanzi, fumetti, film e cartoni, il meccanismo narrativo della formula nascosta in un oggetto prodotto in massa è vecchia e scontata, ma è proprio così che emerge l'effettiva qualità di questa storia, in cui conta non tanto il meccanismo, quanto il talento nel concepire lo sviluppo serializzato della vicenda.
I dialoghi brillanti, affiancati alle situazioni ingegnose e intriganti, rendono lo scontro tra Topolino e Macchia Nera non solo "ancora attuale", ma praticamente credibile in eterno, incastonato com'è in un'epoca da diventare non datato, ma iconico.
L'intensità del ritmo narrativo è ancora più godibile e coinvolgente, se ci si sofferma a individuare la "pausa" e la ripresa tra una striscia e l'altra, tutte mirabilmente gestite con precisione chirurgica dei dialoghi.
Non è certo da meno l'arte, suggestiva, oscura, dettagliata, evocativa, a suo modo realistica. E, soprattutto, arricchita dai malinconici retini che esaltano il tono nero della narrazione, senza mai dimenticare però la leggerezza della matrice Disney: un connubio di opposti che stupisce nella sua efficacia.
Da segnalare il rifugio segreto dell'investigatore Topolino, che sembra quasi la base di un supereroe (da qui anche i travestimenti per agire in incognito).

The mystery never fails to grab the reader. The Blot lurks in the shadows and he and Mickey are excellent duelists. They par and thrust.

Il mio primo 10. Più per il significato intrinseco e storico di quest'avventura che per gli svolgimenti veri e propri (a cui darei 9/10). Leggerla tutta d'un fiato è stato un investimento di tempo piacevole, solo a pensare che nel 1939 i lettori dovettero aspettare oltre 3 mesi per sapere come andava a finire la storia, con 4 vignette al giorno, mi viene un'angoscia tremenda.
Sicuramente leggendola in questo modo si notano alcuni particolari che non hanno molto senso, come il buco che appare sotto lo sgabello di topolino e con il quale il nostro amato topo riesce a liberarsi di una trappola mortale, che nelle vignette precedenti non è neppure accennato nei disegni.
Ma questo sarebbe solo il pelo nell'uovo. Nulla da ridire su un pezzo di storia del fumetto.
Dispiace solo notare come oggi Macchia Nera sia un furfantello e non più il vero nemico di una volta. | | tonkduck | | | | Friday, Apr 16, 2021, 10:45:39 AM | It's not my favourite Gottfredson story... but it's very close. The presentation of O'hara, is the beginning of decades of stories with him, Casey and Mickey.
Lots of action, great art, weird traps... and the villain with the best sense of humour ever (and a striking design).

Perfect balance of gags, character and plot. Gottfredson's strip manage to be kid-friendly, yet not talk down to kids a trapping writers struggle today. The plot is progressing beautifully and the drawings are top notch like most of that era of Gottfredson.
