The problem of what I call orphaned scans is being addressed with a new tool that allows users to access any scan that (s)he uploaded, and if they're all correctly linked with Inducks:

Scans management (you need to be logged in)

There is a brief explanation on that page which I'll copy here, but please ask if this is unclear!

This page allows you to check if all the scans you uploaded are correctly linked with Inducks, and hence appear on the webpages. Scans are never removed, but they may disappear from the webpages when the code of an item is changed by an administrator without the scan being renamed. Since renaming is a complicate process, administrators sometimes reupload the scan, leaving a copy of the original on the server. We call orphaned scans any image that is not linked with an Inducks entry. You may want to check if a copy is shown on the webpage or if they really need to be reuploaded. You may contact an administrator on COAzilla, or to ease this process, reupload them yourself and mark orphaned scans as checked. Thanks!

Here are some guidelines and advices for writing messages to COAzilla, our error reporting tool:

Write your text in English. Use a different language only if you can predict who will read and solve your message.

Only write a message if you are certain about the information. If it is about writers or artists, or anything not obvious, also write the source of your information.

If you want to write a lot of messages, please send an e-mail to us first. There are more efficient ways of entering lots of data into Inducks than using this webpage.

For the same reason, don't report incomplete information when this information is obvious to add (typically list of appearances for covers for which a scan is shown).

Don't report non-mandatory information like most appearance comments (e.g. "silhouette" or "cameo") or one-shot appearances. They're currently too much work to handle.

Check the actual comics whenever possible. If you only rely on scans or present Inducks data to report an error, say so.

Send less error reports, but write them more carefully. Plain English sentences help avoid misunderstandings.

Be patient. Your message might be solved within 5 minutes, but it also might take 5 months. It all depends on the time we have (and we're all volunteers!)

Don't ask questions here like "who knows the artist of this story?" Most likely we cannot answer them anyway. Questions are for a discussion board, but not for COAzilla.

The only response you may get is a simple message saying "solved". Don't be offended by that: we get hundreds of messages per week so we want to spend most of our time actually fixing the errors.

Below are some examples of good vs. bad error reports

Bad

Good

Pete doesn't appear

Pete does not appear; the dog-faced crook on page 16 is not Pete.

The French name of Pete is Jean Bambois

In issue #1234 of French Journal de Mickey, story YM 050, Pete is named Jean Bambois. Please add this name among other French names for Pete.

The artist of this cover is Massimo De Vita

In an interview published in Italy in Maestri Disney 12, Massimo De Vita said he drew this cover.

The description is wrong

The English description does not match with the scan so one of these has to be wrong.

Avoid writing duplicate reports. Reporting the same problem more than
once benefits no one and only leads to more work for Inducks
maintainers

A few new ideas for the collection tool on COA:

1) To avoid selecting by hands hundreds of checkboxes, add an alternative text field interface for selecting issues you own, such as "1-123,501-999" (ranges delimited by commas or annother character). This should be a big improvement, and it will eventually be done.

2) Let people selecting issues they're looking for, and double copies (or issues they may give away/exchange). That way you would be able to who's offering issues you're interested in. Although this could be useful, maybe, I'm not sure we want to be involved in anything that might be commercial. And maybe auction websites are already sufficient ? I'd be interested to have feedbacks on this !

One final thing: an alternative collection managment tool (no connection with Inducks) for French speaking users was recently created. It allows importing one's collection from Inducks, giving the username/password. I've asked the person in charge to ask users to copy/paste from this page instead (it is made for that!) and I suggest not using it for now, as there's no reason to give your COA password to another website. But on the principle, you're of course free to use anny external tool you wish with your data.

I have restarted the tools that periodically compute statistics on comic-book collections (by creators, productions, years). I'm now using a different approach: instead of computing the statistics for every user every month (10 million entries to compute, which was infeasible), the tool regenerates statistics for a few of them (10) each night, choosen among those who updated their collection since the last statistics were generated. The idea is that statistics don't need to be regenerated for people who haven't updated their collection anyway.*
First, I'll try to recompute the statistics for all users - which will take a few days - and then let the tool update them when needed. For now, 400 people have seen their stats updated.

At this page you can check if your stats were updated:
List of story in your collection and statistics last generated on Saturday, Jan 10, 2009, 06:18:37 PM
If you see a "?" however, that means you're not among the ones that the tool picked:
List of story in your collection and statistics last generated on ?

But anyone should have its stats updated, eventually.

Finally, you'll see links to all users' virtual collections, and stats (for those who made this information public) at:
http://coa.inducks.org/podium.php

(*) With a minor exception: sometimes data changes in Inducks, which means your statistics may become less exact. Maybe one day, this will also be fixed...
